Dance techniques

Dancehall

Dancehall is commonly regarded as a raw and catchy street style combining various reggae rhythms. It originated among the Jamaican ghetto youth, at formal and informal artistic and cultural events as well as in hard schools of survival and spiritual renewal.
It was energetic young Jamaicans that introduced into Dancehall specific steps, technique and their personal attitude to Australia. The workshop explores the traditional path of Dancehall, focusing on its African roots and relationships with reggae, while still improving the isolation technique. The participants will be exploring steps such as: “thunderclap”, “nuh linga”, “heel ‘n toe”, “give dem a run”, “log on”, “gully creeper” and “wille bogunce”, which are just a few of the movements performed at street events such as Passa Passa or in video clips by Movedo, Bennie Man, Lady and Sean Paul.
