Choreography: Virpi Pahkinen Music: Roger Ludvigsen Costium designer: Helene Thorsell Premiere: 23.03.2002 Duration: 17 minutes
In her choreography Virpi Pahkinen combines stylised modern dance from the circle of Caroline Carlsson with the dance technique of Butoh. Reviewers often call her the shamaness of dance. Based at the Stockholm House of Dance she presents her choreography the world over (Europe, Australia, Mexico, South Africa, Japan, Canada). She is a laureate of the Finland Culture Prize for young artists, the Svenska Dagbladet Opera Prize, the Golden Antenna in Bulgaria (for the film version of the performance Bardo 010) and the Solo Dance Festival in Stuttgart, amongst others. She worked a number of times with Ingmar Bergman at the National Dramatic Theatre in Stockholm. For Virpi Parkhinen, dance is a form of meditation. She poses questions touching upon the fundamentals of life and its' passing. She has drawn inspiration for her work, amongst others, from the Tibetan Book of the Dead. Despite the seriousness of the spectrum of themes that occupy her, Virpi does not shy away from distancing humour.
