| MODERN DANCE Marta Graham used this term for the first time in the 1920s. To her we owe the definition of rules defining the technique, philosophy and aesthetics of modern dance. Rejecting the artificial and idealistic form of classical ballet, Marta Graham introduced a dance method which reflects the real events and experiences of the modern human being. The emphasis in modern dance is on effort (as the source of movement), contraction and release. Being the basis and the ABC of all contemporary dancers, modern dance remains an open technique supplemented with new elements typical of the experiences and styles of such artists as Cunningham, Horton, Limon and also the style of a given teacher conducting the class or workshop.
