KARINE SAPORTA (France) One of the most eminent personalities in French dance. Having obtained a degree in classical dance, she studied sociology and philosophy at the University of Paris and then went to the USA to study choreography and movement composition. She also developed an interest in film, video, television and photography. Back to France, she founded her own Compagnie Karine Saporta in an attempt to redefine contemporary dance. The company featured many artists who are now at the forefront of French choreography. Karine Saporta is currently one of the most celebrated French choreographers, knight of the Legion of Honour, director of the National Choreographic Centre of Caen/Basse in Normandy, professor at the Art and Music Department of the University of Evry, president of the Dance Commission, vice-president of the Society of Dramatic Authors and Composers in France (SACD), and artistic director of choreographic performances at the Avignon Festival. Karine Saporta’s interests also include urban dance (urban culture, hip hop), theatre (performances for Comedie Francaise), singing (cooperation with musical theatres). In her teaching and choreographing, she attaches great importance to improvisation, which is not merely a technique but a reason to intellectual and philosophical contemplation.
